Stop The Baby Chick Eating Contest
action alert!
On Scotland's Isle of Lewis, gannet chicks are being beaten to death with sticks, decapitated and then pickled -- all so footballers can hold a chick-eating contest.
Dear Friends, As an important part of our environment, seabirds are protected from hunting by law everywhere in the United Kingdom. Everywhere, that is, except for on Sula Sgeir, a rocky islet forty miles north of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland -- where baby gannet chicks, also known as "gugas," are routinely beaten to death with sticks before being decapitated, singed in a fire and then pickled to make a "delicacy." These chicks don't form a necessary part of anyone's diets, but footballers on the Isle of Lewis are making sport out of them. They just had their first "guga-eating contest," where they competed to see who could wolf down half of a chick the fastest. These sweet, innocent babies are being brutalised just so a small number of people can try a strange food for their ow n entertainment. Ask Scotland to ban the guga hunt and eating contest immediately.
