After years of relentless campaigning, our voice together with that of other anti-slavery organisations in India has been heard – the Indian Parliament has approved a ban on employment of children below 14 years.
Not only will child labour now be a cognizable offence in India, punishments for violations have been raised, and a new definition of 'adolescent' has been introduced to ban employment of those aged 14-18 years in hazardous jobs.1
Once again, our community of over 8 million anti-slavery activists has shown its power and ability to influence change.
But the campaign is not over. The Parliament has exempted family enterprises from the employment ban, suggesting that socio-economic conditions justify children helping their families in certain occupations. This sounds reasonable but may lead to exploitation of children.2
