If you're unfamiliar with the mining industry, you might picture gold miners as old-fashioned prospectors with a pickaxe and a pan. In reality, though, gold miners lead hard, dangerous lives -- and many of them are children.
Children put to work mining and processing gold are exposed to lead and mercury poisoning, which can cause permanent brain damage and even death.
Many countries have restrictions on child labor, but are failing to enforce child labor laws. And in the meantime, more and more children are being put at risk of brain damage or even death as they work in gold mines.
