В то время, как кризис в отношениях между Украиной и Россией вот-вот обернётся открытыми военными действиями, международные хирурги ирландской организации "Детям Чернобыля" (Chernobyl Children International") продолжают спасать детей. Нынешний российский малыш был спасён на средства благотворителей из США и Украины.
Семимесячный Леонид из Чернобыльской зоны на западе России имеет врождённую болезнь сердца. Окружающие думали, что он обречён. Его мама Наталия молила Бога о чуде, жизнь её ребёнка висела на волоске. Ее молитвы были услышаны врачами программы кардиохирургии "International Children's Heart Foundation" под руководством доктора Вильяма Новика. Эти самоотверженные хирурги лечили детей летом в Харькове, в истерзанной войной Восточной Украине. Они выполняли операции, от которых отказались российские врачи из-за риска летального исхода. Доктор Игорь Поливёнок, руководитель кардиохирургического отделения в Харьковской больнице, возглавил команду врачей, успешно выполнивших операцию за счёт добровольных пожертвований в Фонд "Детям Чернобыля". Мальчик Леонид продолжает жить со своей мамой.
История Леонида поведала нам о том, что у мира нет границ. Но пули и политики могли бы убить этих детей, а ведь все малыши заслуживают право на жизнь. Счёт идёт на часы.
Ежегодно на Украине 6 000 детей рождаются с болезнями сердца. Каждый четвёртый ребёнок с диагнозом порок сердца ("Сердце Чернобыля", "Chernobyl Heart") без вмешательства опытных хирургов не доживёт до 6 лет.

Russian child crosses border to Ukraine for life-saving operation

As the crisis between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate with the fear of an impending war, the story of how Chernobyl Children International's (CCI) sponsored Ukrainian and US surgeons saved a Russian child's life is left in the background.
Seven month old Leonid is from the Chernobyl area of Western Russia and was born with a chronic heart condition that he would not live with, but would die with, without intervention. His mother Natalia prayed for a miracle as Leonid's life was hanging by a thread. Her prayers were answered by our Cardiac Surgery programme led by Dr William Novick (ICHF).
The CCI sponsored cardiac team "ran the gauntlet" and travelled to Kharkiv, in war-torn Eastern Ukraine this summer to perform the surgery which Russian doctors were unwilling to carry out due to the risk of a fatal outcome. Dr Igor Polivenok, Head of Cardiac Surgery at Kharkiv Hospital, led the team that performed the operation successfully thanks to the support of donations to Chernobyl Children International. Leonid survived and is now starting to live his life with his mother.
The story of Leonid helps us to remember that ours is a world without borders. It is not bullets that could kill these children but politics. All children deserve the chance at life and thanks to the generosity of our donors we can continue saving lives of vulnerable children who otherwise may lose their lives to politics. Thank you to Dr Igor Polivenok and Dr William Novick for championing this life-saving work in Kharkiv.
The rapidly deteriorating situation in Ukraine has already forced the suspension of two life-saving cardiac missions earlier this year. The surgical team return to Kharkiv this weekend to carry out the third life-saving mission of 2014. The reality is that one in four children could die without intervention...so the programmes we fund are truly a race against time.

6,000 children are born with genetic heart diseases and defects in Ukraine each year. The reality is that without treatment one in every four children diagnosed with the heart defect know as "Chernobyl Heart" will die before they reach the age of six.
