Recently, a man named Pham Viet Do did the same thing people do all over the world every day: He posted something on the Internet criticizing his government. All Pham did was write an article, but now he's facing 15 months in prison.
Soon after Pham published his piece, the authorities showed up at his door. They searched Pham's house before arresting him, saying he had "abused democratic freedoms" and that he was "dangerous to society."
Pham's blog posts aren't dangerous to society. The real danger to society is living in an authoritarian state where any dissident view is punished, and where people live in fear of even mildly questioning their leaders.
Vietnam's crackdown on alternative viewpoints has to stop now.
